The Main Differences Between TPO And EPDM For Low Slope Roofing

EPDM roofing systems installed by  have been the slope roof industry`s leader for more than 50 years now. This type of single-ply membrane is highly durable and resistant to any weather phenomena, including hail storms, due to its synthetic rubber surface that will bounce the hail off, with very little to no damage to the roof`s surface.  Of course the installation needs to be done by an experienced Boulder commercial roofing company to be lasting and durable.

TPO roof systems, on the other hand, are made of thermoplastic. They are also resistant to most weather phenomena, but when they get struck by hailstones, TPO membranes will get damage that may compromise the integrity of the roof.

When it comes to conducting roof repairs, it will be easier for roofing specialists to deal with EPDM roofs than with TPO roofs, considering that no electrical source is required for welding.

EPDM is also considered the better choice for installing solar panels on, as they do not interfere with sunlight absorption. On the other hand, TPO membranes are reflective, which may have a negative effect on the solar panels` efficient operation.

If installing solar panel is not your concern, but the energy efficiency of your building is, the choice between EPDM and TPO must be done according to the local climate. EPDM membrane has a dark surface, which makes it efficient in colder climates and less efficient in hot climates. On the other hand, TPO`s reflectivity will surely help air conditioners to work more efficiently in sunny weather.
